The female reproductive system is a beautifully complex design. Its purpose is to produce female sex cells called eggs and nurture a developing embryo for almost ten months. Ovaries, Fallopian tubes, and the uterus are a few of the main reproductive organs needed to create life. However, systems must be healthy and function well enough for reproduction to occur.
Many women today face challenges concerning their reproductive health. Conditions such as menstrual cramping, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), cystitis, heavy menstrual bleeding, and infertility drive many women to seek holistic practices that can treat symptoms and get to the root of the problem. Proper nutrition, exercise, hydration, supplementation, herbs, and essential oils are some of the tools a woman can use to strengthen and maintain the health of her reproductive system.
There are many essential oils that can be used for reproductive health. They are natural, simple, inexpensive, and effective options that heal the body. Here is a list of a few essential oils that are great for relief from menstrual cramping, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), bloating, water retention, and more.
Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)
Geranium is naturally found in tropical regions and native to southern Africa. The plant, characteristically identified with clusters of small pink flowers, produces an aroma very similar to that of a rose. Geranium essential oil has been used to treat female reproductive disorders, menstrual cramping, infertility, endometriosis, PMS, menopausal symptoms, blood and lymph circulation, hemorrhoids, depression, and fatigue.
Clary sage (Salvia sclarea)
Clary sage is a very close relative to common sage, Salvia officinalis, and is mainly harvested for its essential oil. Both clary sage and common sage (garden sage) contain properties that have been found to work on female reproductive challenges. Clary sage essential oil is used as a tonic for the womb, relieving menstrual-related pains and balancing menopausal problems.
Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens)
This evergreen tree, also known as Mediterranean cypress, produces antispasmodic compounds that work well to reduce muscle spasms and uterine contractions. Also, cypress essential oil can treat varicose veins and hemorrhoids by strengthening blood vessels and improving blood circulation.
Chamomile roman (Chamaemelum nobile, formerly Anthemis nobilis)
Chamomile is a small, sweetly aromatic herb with white flowers that look similar to daisies. Ancient Egyptian and Greek societies used this herb as medicine and science can barely unfold the mysteries of its healing powers. Flower heads and stems are used fresh or dry for the extraction of chamomile essential oil. Chamomile essential oil has been found to relieve menstrual cramps and reduce muscular spasms and contractions. Also, chamomile is calming and is an effective treatment for emotional symptoms related to menstruation.
USING ESSENTIAL OILS
A great approach to using essential oils for female reproductive health is by creating massage oils and applying them to the abdomen. Combine your preferred essential oils and add them to a natural carrier oil such as jojoba oil or coconut oil. Gently massage your abdomen everyday with your massage oil. For increased circulation to the abdomen, you can apply your massage oil with a heated compress. Due to the potency of essential oils, be sure to always dilute your essential oils in a carrier oil. Ten drops of essential oil to one fluid ounce of carrier oil is a good ratio to work with to avoid skin irritation and other sensitivities.
